Built new tournament tee box for major national tournaments we host (Wofford Invitational & Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational). Lengthened the hole by 30+ yards, and was designed and built to match surrounding topography and features (irregular mounding, elevated square teeing surface, etc.)
Being able to manage construction and renovation projects is a key component of success as a golf course superintendent. Almost every course has some sort of ongoing renovation or master plan as time goes on. I have been directly associated with numerous projects both large and small, with in-house staff and hired contractors. A few are highlighted below.
The face of this bunker had to be renovated due to a deluge of water that washed all the existing soil from under the turf on the face. We consulted with our golf course architect and created a plan on how the bunker should be remediated.
The turf in this fairway needed to be replaced due to shade and the slope being north facing (winterkill damage). Everything was sprayed with non-selective herbicides and then all dead material was stripped and removed. The slopes in this fairway were altered to be less severe and channel water towards the drains at the bottom. It was regraded and then sodded with new Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass.
Due to changes in the ancillary buildings, Holes 14-16 had to be completely redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up. Over 57,000 cubic yards of dirt were moved from the old racquet facility location to accommodate the new location. Additionally, a creek was opened and rerouted to bisect the fairway of the new 15th hole and flow into a natural wetland/pond in and around the left side of the new 15th green.
Tees (Tahoma 31 Berumudagrass) and greens (007XL Bentgrass) are built to modified USGA specifications, and bunkers are built with Capillary Concrete liners. Native fescues and grasses were seeded between holes for definition and contrast of sightlines, as well as to provide a hazard for wayward shots. The total cost for the racquet facility and golf course construction is $ 8.5M+.
